A Bit about Resonator Banjos
The banjo is a small acoustic guitar used in a wide variety of genres including bluegrass, folk, jazz, classical and even contemporary music.
It has six strings and a flat top with a hollowed-out soundbox, and produces sound by striking strings attached to a resonating body. The strings are held in place by a bridge. The body can be made of wood, plastic, metal or other materials, while the neck is often made of wood or metal.
This piece was originally brought over to North America from West Africa, and was popular among African Americans in the first half of the 20th century. It was an adaptation of the xalam, a stringed instrument from the Wolof and Mandinka peoples of West Africa.
In its original form, this acoustic piece was used to accompany singing in dances and ceremonies. Since then, its iconic strains have spread across the world, finding its way into a wide variety of genres.
